Style Highlights from the Maleficent World Premiere (Including Angelina Jolie's 'Rubberized' Gown and Elle Fanning's Choker)

Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning have been turning it out in the style department for the Maleficent promotional tour, and Wednesday’s world premiere in Hollywood marked their most fashion-forward appearances so far. The co-stars continued to select red carpet ensembles that nod to their on-screen characters — Jolie as Maleficent, the evil fairy, and Fanning as Princess Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty). Plus, their accessories were so major (or killer, in Jolie’s case), we have to talk about them. See both actresses’ head-turning looks — from all angles — below.

It’s no surprise that Jolie chose another Atelier Versace design for Wednesday’s premiere. But the rubberized silk material of the black strapless dress feels fresh and unexpected. She teamed the bold look with even bolder accessories — two gold spike bangles and a matching spike earring (that could have been used as a weapon if necessary during Brad Pitt’s attack) both custom designed for the star by Stella McCartney.

Sure the silhouette looks great on the actress (like everything else she wears), but the rubberized effect is definitely polarizing (dare we say it, trash bags come to mind), so we’re not surprised that PEOPLE readers remain divided on the bold look. We think she totally pulls it off.

Fanning continued to channel a princess in a gorgeous powder blue embroidered Elie Saab couture gown, featuring a belt and sheer skirt. She completed the ephemeral design with a vintage-inspired Neil Lane choker and a floral hair comb around her low, soft bun.

The 16-year-old star told reporters on the red carpet that playing Sleeping Beauty has special meaning, because Aurora was always her favorite princess.

“I feel like I related to her the most because of her hair and the color of her dress, and she was just my girl,” Fanning explained. “And to be able to say that I am Sleeping Beauty is just crazy. It’s so exciting and I’m still pinching myself about that, that I’m actually Aurora. We loved the original so much, but she’s still a princess and she frolics through the forest, but it’s nice that our version is more modern. She’s stronger and she gets to show real emotions instead of just the animated drawing.”

Elle Fanning: On Being True to Her Style, Avoiding Too-Sexy Trends and What She'll Wear to Prom

Elle Fanning Teen Vogue Courtesy Teen Vogue

Elle Fanning may be only 16, but she’s already hit a ton of incredibly cool milestones on her life checklist. Her latest movie Maleficent dominated the box office this weekend, she’s been a face of Miu Miu and Marc by Marc Jacobs and — as she proves in her Teen Vogue June cover story, she’s got the right idea about being true to her style.

Of her very quirky, very specific taste in clothes, Fanning tells the magazine’s editor-in-chief Amy Astley, “Well, I want a boy to like my weird style. If he doesn’t, then he’s not the right person for me. Because if you start dressing one way and it’s not truly you, then you have to stick to it. Otherwise, you wear your weird thing and then he’s like, ‘What’s that?’ and you’re like, ‘Well, I like it!’ And then you are in an uncomfortable situation.” We wish we’d had that quote to print out and put on our mirrors when we were in high school.

In the interview, she shares that many of the girls in her grade are graduating to short, tight dresses “with really curled hair and the black eye shadow. It might be them, but it’s just not me,” she says. “I just feel like it’s better, looking fresh. It’s also sexier not wearing any makeup at all. Like, honestly, if you talk to guys, they’ll all think that.”

Elle Fanning Teen Vogue Courtesy Teen Vogue

And it sounds like she may have one particular guy in mind — she’s heading to prom again with the same friend who took her as a sophomore. Last year she wore a Ralph Lauren dress, but she says this year she may wear a cream tux to go with his black one. “How cute would that look?” she asks. Just add that to the list of reasons Elle’s one of the coolest girls around.

Check out of the rest of the article in the issue, on stands Tuesday, or at TeenVogue.com, and tell us: What do you think of Fanning’s style? Do you agree with her ‘stay true to you’ style philosophy?

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Blue Shadow, Sophisticated Rompers and the Shoe to Stash

blue lids, chic rompersAndrew H. Walker/Getty; Ilya S. Savenok/Getty; Ken

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw eyelids that popped, chic little onesies and a shoe style that likely won’t catch on

Up: Blue Eyeshadow. Lupita Nyong’o kicked this trend off, and now everyone else is following suit. Keira Knightley complimented her teal metallic Erdem dress with an equally shimmering shadow. Following with the monochromatic theme, Liv Tyler lined he eyes a deep blue to go with her navy Stella McCartney mini. Emmy Rossum, on the other hand, decided to contrast her fuchsia Monique Lhuillier gown with a turquoise shade along her lids.

Up: Sophisticated Rompers. When you think of a romper most of you would probably associate it with music festival fashion (or the sandbox!) — not the red carpet. However, we have seen some designs this week that made us think there might be a place for these chic onesies besides a mosh pit full of sweaty young adults. Amy Poehler chose a slouchy black piece with lace sleeves that is both formal event-appropriate and summer-friendly. Candice Swanepoel selected an off-the-shoulder Candela creation with sheer sleeves, while Kourtney Kardashian opted for a bright pleated Blaque fuchsia romper for a fun pop of color.

Down: Peep-Toe Mules. This style was definitely one of spring’s hottest shoes this year — and why not? It’s easy to slip on and more comfortable than walking around the office all day in five-inch stilettos. But recently, we saw a variation that just doesn’t seem to quite cut it. Elle Fanning selected a black pair to go with her pale-pink Lanvin mini, but they seemed to be missing something — the tips! While we don’t see the mule going away anytime soon, the Maleficent star should probably put this toe-baring pair back on the rack.

Which of these trends will you try? Which will you skip? Tell us in the comments!

Elle Fanning Goes Brunette (and Gets a Cut!): See Her Dramatic New Look

This is one celebrity hair change we didn’t see coming. Elle Fanning dropped a beauty bombshell over the weekend, ditching her signature blonde hair for a much darker hue. And we can’t stop talking about it.

Elle Fanning Dark HairWireImage; FilmMagic

The 16-year-old actress debuted her brunette shade with an auburn sheen at The Boxtrolls L.A. premiere, and we wonder how long it took her colorist to cover up that blonde. The star also got a blunt cut, shaving at least 2-3 inches off her ends. She styled the look with a sleek center part. The dramatic color definitely plays up her green eyes, but it’s unclear whether the major mane switch-up is here to stay or for a new role.

As for her beauty MO, Fanning recently revealed to Teen Vogue that she follows the less is more philosophy which other girls in her grade seem to dismiss, “with really curled hair and the black eye shadow. It might be them, but it’s just not me,” she said.

“I just feel like it’s better, looking fresh. It’s also sexier not wearing any makeup at all,” she added. “Like, honestly, if you talk to guys, they’ll all think that.”

We wonder if Elle Fanning’s new brunette hair has made her style a little wilder. Because the 16-year-old actress has definitely been experimenting with her outfits lately. On Thursday, she changed three times in less than 24 hours while promoting her new film The Young Ones, and each outfit got progressively more revealing. Let’s recap.

Elle Fanning styleJohns PKI/Splash News Online; Humberto Carreno/Sta

First Fanning selected a blush collared Jenny Packham shirtdress featuring crystal embellishments, a black bow at the neck and coordinating waistband for her most sophisticated look of the day. She paired the look with sleek black pumps for an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. She then left the Ed Sullivan theater in a black lace design with pink floral embroidery and coordinating satin shoes.

And for her final look of the day, she follow the path of these stars in her boldest look to date: an itty-bitty floral crop top, high-waisted black midi skirt (both Creatures of the Wind) and tangerine pumps. It’s a far cry from her princess dresses, but she seems to be loving her new look.

Swimsuits on the Streets: Stars Are Wearing One-Pieces as Bodysuits, and We Need to Know If That's Insane

Grab your one-piece swimsuit; we’re going shopping! This summer, your favorite stars — including Elle Fanning, Shay Mitchell and Selena Gomez — have been sporting maillots instead of the standard bodysuit for their street style ensembles. We can’t deny they look cute, but the jury’s still out on whether we can support swimwear as streetwear, which is why we need you to vote below.

Elle Fanning Selena Gomez Kylie JennerFameFlynet; Curtis Means/Ace Pictures/ZUMA; X17onl

Fanning, the most recent star spotted sporting a one-piece swimsuit around town, opted for a pink-and-white vertically striped Solid & Striped “The Anne-Marie” suit while out and about in L.A. And to make it more “boho” and less “beach-ready,” the 17-year-old paired her tank with denim culottes and a pair of platform floral wedges.

Gomez is a big fan of bodysuits these days (remember when she wore this red Reformation one with cutoffs?), but in this instance, she’s rocking a swimsuit instead. She wore her plunging white Solid & Striped Anne-Marie one-piece with another pair of denim shorts and a leopard coat worn as a cape, which almost makes it less crazy in this sweltering heat.

Kylie Jenner must have taken another style cue from big sister Kim Kardashian West before deciding on her latest look: a form-fitting white bodysuit worn under a pair of light-wash jeans. Remember when big sis Kim had everyone thinking she was wearing a swimsuit with suede last summer? It was only a matter of time before her style twin did, too!

And finally, Pretty Little Liars star Mitchell sports her blue-and-white striped Solid & Striped “The Anne-Marie” swimsuit while lounging in a golf cart on the beach shore in a snapshot from her Instagram. (Can we get in on that?) Mitchell teamed her swimwear with a pair of denim cutoffs and some mirrored round sunnies for a version of the look that is best suited for a beachside bar.

Having great style doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. And some of our favorite stars prove (over and over again) that you can still look fab without dropping serious cash. So to make that point, each week we’ll be featuring the best celeb style finds (all under $100) that we think should be added to your virtual cart — stat.

She may only be 17, but Elle Fanning’s street-style M.O. is wise beyond her years. From chic separates to flirty skirts, the actress nails the laid-back L.A. uniform with every ensemble she steps out in. And her latest look, a floral crop top, a white American Apparel Tennis Skirt ($54) and a pair of crisp, white sneakers, is making us wish we, too, were Cali girls who could rock warm-weather wear all year long.

Elle must have taken style notes from big sis Dakota Fanning, because coincidentally, the 21-year-old also has an off-duty wardrobe we’d like to steal (and can, since they’re in our budget!). Seen above in a baby blue floral frock and a pair of camel-colored Cocobelle “Corsica” sandals ($88), Dakota is soaking up the last bits of summer in style.

And lastly, former Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr keeps it cool and causal in a look that was, in our opinion, made for the weekend. From her slouchy floral pants to her breezy tank and Vans Croc Leather Slip-Ons ($55), we’re already planning on replicating this outfit once the workweek comes to an end. Is it Friday yet?

Will we ever get over Kendall Jenner’s ability to make a basic tee look chic? Probably not, which is why we’re highlighting her latest look, a striped long-sleeve One Eleven tee ($24.90 at Express), which she tied up and teamed with distressed jeans and her on-trend ’70s-inspired sunnies. Who knew tying back a shirt (à la middle school gym class days) for a cropped look could instantly transform an outfit? Kendall did, obviously.

Last week we mentioned how much we’re loving Elle Fanning’s summer street style (her commitment to all things denim is pretty impressive). This week, she’s at it again with a halter-neck chambray dress and a cartoonish pair of Soludos x Jason Polan slip-ons ($65). Don’t worry — we’re still trying to track down that dress.

And lastly, Kendall’s BFF, Hailey Baldwin, is here to remind us that $10 can really go a long way. Like, it’s enough to get her sunshine yellow cropped Topshop tank. So you might want to stock up for next summer — they come in a variety of colors!

Let These Celebs Show You How to Make a Pilgrim Outfit Look Chic This Thanksgiving

Bonnets. Buckles. Neck ties. Ruffle collars. Head-to-toe thick, gray flannel. The Pilgrims started some serious style trends. And it’s no wonder four centuries later celebrities are still obsessed with America’s Thanksgiving founders’ buttoned-up, modest aesthetic.

Kris Jenner Marc Jacobs Zosie Mamet Pilgrim StyleJason LaVeris/FilmMagic; Randy Brooke/WireImage; Cindy Ord/WireImage

The reigning queen of the Pilgrim dress is undeniably Kris Jenner. When she posted an Instagram snap of an email Kim sent her saying, “no more pilgrim adams [sic] family outfits,” the Internet immediately rushed to the defense of the momager’s choice in attire. The wrist-cinching ribbons alone make this look a clear winner. Gunning for her spot as best dressed settler, however, is Marc Jacobs in this outfit from the 2012 Met Gala. His pilgrims shoes complete with oversized rhinestone buckle may have been too flashy for the original early Americans, but they’ll look right at home at all your Thanksgiving-related festivities. Toss in Zosia Mamet’s ruffled high-collared shirt, and you’ve got the perfect look to leave just about everything to the imagination.

If you’re looking for something a little more similar to the Jenner-brand of monochromatic full-coverage glam, Elle Fanning, Anna dello Russo, or Jaime King’s cocktail dresses should do the trick. But the secret to these looks is more than just a wide collar and modest cut, the real beauty lies in a smart choice of accessories. A bold hat, whether wide-brimmed like AdR’s or closer to Elle’s cloche, will immediately convey to guests how seriously you take this holiday. Top it off with Jaime’s falling band secured with a black ribbon choker and everyone will know you also aren’t messing around with historical accuracy.

But if you aren’t trying to go for full-blown petticoats and breeches, try out one of these more modern Pilgrim-inspired looks. Alexa Chung’s blouson sleeves feel perfectly historically appropriate, but their sheerness gives them a decidedly modern edge. Ellen also balanced out her old-timey pussy bow blouse, waistcoat, and velvet blazer with a pair of slimly tailored slacks our forefathers would have found downright indecent. Finally, Michelle Williams silky tuxedo-inspired take puts a youthful twist on our nation’s fashion history.

And remember, if anyone gives you a hard time about your super holiday-appropriate apparel, just let them know you were told it was a ’90’s theme party.

We Tried It: Suki Waterhouse's Glitter Tears Eye Makeup

$
0
0

What It Is: For the past few weeks, stars have been experimenting with new ways to wear glittery eyeshadow— Suki Waterhouse and Elle Fanning took the sparkle off the lid and under the lower lash line and Hailey Baldwin added a hint of shine to her otherwise natural look. Suki’s makeup artist Wendy Rowe predicted glitter eye makeup would be a trend for the upcoming season and she was right: It was all over the runway during fashion month.

Who Tried it: Catherine Kast, Style Editor

Why I Did It: Not only am I a huge fan of Suki’s, but I am the type of girl who always picks a bold eye over a bold lip color. I was on the lookout for something fun to try since I’m already exhausted by quirky cat-eyes. It’s as if Suki’s look at the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies premiere leapt out of my dreams and onto the red carpet (Seriously, it’s worth seeing the whole thing head-to-toe). Once Elle Fanning showed up at the Saint Laurent show in L.A. just a week later trying the trend, I knew I had to get on it.

Suki Samir Hussein/WireImage

Level of difficulty: 3. Extremely easy to put on, annoying to get off.

Testing the trend: Suki’s makeup artist Wendy Rowe posted a tutorial to her website soon after the premiere, so I had a great starting point. But the biggest surprise was that Suki’s glitter isn’t makeup at all– Rowe’s only clue was that it’s a “special mix.” I had Martha Stewart’s 24-pack of glitter at home, and I borrowed some more super-fine glitter from a friend, who got hers at Michaels (I couldn’t find it on the site though, sorry!).

Elle Allen Berezovsky/Getty; Grant Lamos IV/Getty

The key to pulling off this look is an even, luminous base. I blended my usual foundations (Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat and Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Foundation) with a few drops of the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector highlighter in Moonshine for extra shimmer.  Then I brightened up my undereyes with the Touche Eclat pen. I didn’t want to do too much concealer there because I knew the glitter was coming!

Suki Catherine Kast

Rowe suggests “contouring the eye with natural tones,” so I used Youngblood Cosmetics Pressed Mineral Eyeshadow Quad in Timeless for some subtle definition. Then I lined my inner waterline with Anastasia Metallic Lustre Liner in Liquid Gold and used my regular black liner (Sonia Kashuk’s Eye Definer) on the outer rims and lash line. I didn’t get too obsessive with the liner because Suki’s wasn’t super precise and if anything, that added to the effortlessness of the look. So the lips don’t compete with the eyes, Rowe suggests a nude lip; Mine was Revlon’s Ultra HD Matte lip color in Seduction.
Instagram Photo

Then I mixed a few drops of my Shiseido eye serum with a small amount of glitter on the top of my hand and tapped it onto my undereye with my middle finger, careful to avoid getting any in my eye. Then I used my (clean and dry) pointer finger to navigate the glitter into a kind of triangle shape. I finished with a coat of Benefit’s Roller Lash mascara. Tip: Do your mascara last—after the glitter On my first try I put it on before and I had glitter sticking to my lower lashes and ultimately ending up in my waterline everytime I blinked. Not fun.

RELATED VIDEO: How It’s Done: Jennifer Aniston’s Red Carpet Ponytail

Verdict: I love it. I didn’t end up having an occasion to wear this to, but I think it’s just the right amount of sparkle for a weekend night out. I wore it to the grocery store on Sunday night and to the office one day just to see what would happen. Obviously glitter is not really workplace-friendly, but most of my colleagues didn’t even notice until they got within a foot of me. I don’t recommend swapping glitter for your usual concealer, but it does cause light to reflect off that area so any dark circles are minimized. It’s kind of a beast to get off: I used Ole Henriksen’s Melting Cleanser followed by an eye makeup remover followed by a wet q-tip to catch stray flecks. I feel like I was finding little specks of glitter in my clothes for days to come.

Also, I recommend being very selective with your glitter. My gold was a little yellower and finer than Suki’s and Elle’s, so it was hard to get the desired effect. And my liner was a cooler tone than I would’ve liked to match my glitter to.

My main takeaway is that you can achieve this vibe with products you already have and a little bit of craft-store glitter. The best part about it is that imperfections are totally fine here—you don’t have to be a makeup artist to make it look good!

We Tried It: Suki Waterhouse’s Glitter Tears Eye Makeup

Not fun.

Bust out your moody eye shadow palettes — this season’s beauty is all about the statement eye! Summer is the time to stash away heavy shadows in favor of colorful eyeliners and mascaras (like these!) for a fun, unexpected pop of color, but your favorite stars, including Shay Mitchell, Elle Fanning and Joan Smalls, are also making the case for the rich, sultry red-tinted smoky eye. Check out their bold looks, below!

Monochromatic makeup never goes out of style. Case in point: The Pretty Little Liars star’s gorgeous mauve-hued smoky eye, which was created by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta to accent the actress’ hot pink summer dress.

The colorful shadow look was clearly the star of the show, as Ta left the rest of Mitchell’s makeup look fairly neutral, painting her pucker a soft shade of pale pink and lightly dusting her cheeks with a subtle rosy blush shade.

If you want to embrace the sparkle for your next GNO, follow in Fanning’s footsteps, who covered her lids in pink glitter for
the The Neon Demon premiere in L.A. on Tuesday evening. The glitzy eye shadow look, which was perfected by makeup artist, Erin Ayanian Monroe, complemented the star’s dazzling sequin embellished Dolce & Gabbana dress.

The key to nailing the bold look like Fanning? Keep the rest of your makeup simple (add a baby pink pout!) to let the sparkle take center stage.

And lastly, for Sunday night’s Tony Awards, Smalls stunned on the red carpet with her winged-out maroon shadow look to pair with her plunging embellished Altuzarra gown.

Ta was also the mastermind behind the supermodel’s monochromatic moment (he clearly has a thing with matching makeup), and kept the rest of the star’s makeup pared down by playing up her cheekbones with a subtle highlighter and swiping on a nude-hued lipstick for a soft-looking pout.

Looks like Blake Lively has some red carpet outfit change competition! Elle Fanning has been out promoting her new film, the supermodel thriller, The Neon Demon, all week in N.Y.C., but in the last 24 hours alone, she dazzled in not one, but four show-stopping ensembles.

The 18-year-old actress started her whirlwind day of press at AOL‘s s BUILD Speaker Series (and then to Amazon’s Style Code Live) in a super-feminine, blush-toned slip dress with lace detailing, which she accessorized with a delicate matching choker and Gucci mules in the same hue. As for her makeup, she opted for a fresh-faced look with minimal eye makeup, rosy cheeks and a nude lip.

The next stop on Fanning’s press tour was an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she selected a sleek black jumpsuit with a sheer, bejeweled top, teaming the statement onesie with an equally bold red lip and peep-toe Louboutins.

For the evening’s main event, The Neon Demon N.Y.C. premiere, the actress stunned in an ethereal, one-shoulder pale pink Gucci tulle gown with plisse ruffles details, green velvet belt and silk flowers. Fanning’s glam squad teamed the gorgeous dress with a beautiful braided updo (adorned with multi-color flowers!), flushed cheeks and a rosy pink lip.

And after the show is the afterparty… where the starlet changed into a satin emerald-hued minidress with bow-tie detailing. As for her shoes, she switched back into her Louboutins, and then swiped on a coral-colored gloss to complement the green mini.

Elle Fanning’s Floral Updo Is Pure #HairGoals

‘Tis the season for floral updos! After Lucy Hale blew us away with her romantic look infused with craft store flowers, Elle Fanning showed up to the New York premiere of her latest film, The Neon Demon, on Wednesday in an equally gorgeous blooming (and braided!) look that paired perfectly with her super-feminine, one-shoulder pale pink Gucci tulle gown.

And because the dressed-up ‘do is what bridal hair Pinterest boards are made of, we tapped the star’s hairstylist Jenda to break down how she created the style for this week’s Look of the Week.

Jenna says the plaited updo was actually inspired by the supermodel-themed thriller the 18-year-old stars in, which is why the pro decided to incorporate floral embellishments into the hairstyle. “The combination of braids and flowers creates a cool innocence to this look,” she tells PeopleStyle. “Pulling your hair back in braids adds texture while showing off your natural beauty, and the addition of flowers takes it to the next level, making the style more modern.”

The look took about 30 minutes to create, Jenda says. She began by giving Fanning a deep side part on the left and made a 2- to 3-inch section of hair in the front that she twisted into a French braid that wrapped around the back, stopped in center at the nape of the neck and then continued to the ends of the hair.

After securing the twists with rubber bands, the hair pro continued the process on the right side, and then split the center section, creating two more soft braids. “The key is to not make the sections too perfect and clean, so it has an easy effortless feel,” says Jenda.

Once she was done braiding, Jenda twisted and then pinned the tails of the plaits into a braided bun on the low right.

Next, it was time for the flowers — and, yes, those gorgeous blooms are the real deal, says the pro. “They’re a combination of roses, ranunculus and others from Belle Fleur Flowers in N.Y.C.,” Alcorn tells PeopleStyle. “Elle knew she wanted real flowers in her hair, as it was a nice play on the big flowers on her Gucci dress.”

Jenda pinned in the mini blooms with bobby pins, arranging the accessories in no particular order. “There is no real science to this,” she says. “It’s balanced but not too perfect.” The key, she says, is to “keep it artful and have fun.”

A mist of Oribe Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray tamed flyaways and finished the look. “Elle squealed, ‘Oh my gosh, I love the hair! It’s perfect!'”

Elle Fanning Looks Pretty in Pink (Hair)

Elle Fanning/Instagram

Elle Fanning has a reputation for being a fashionable risk taker. The young actress has always been sartorially wise beyond her years, regularly incorporating more experimental fashion brands like Rodarte into her standard red carpet wardrobe rotation. But her most recent aesthetic risk is by far her most out of character yet, ditching her signature blonde locks for a much more summery shade of dusty rose.

Perhaps her role in The Neon Demon, a fashion industry-based thriller, inspired her to give her look a stylish refresh, or perhaps there’s simply something in the air causing celebs everywhere to feel the urge to go a particular shade of blush. In either case, to achieve this solid shade of pastel pink, the 18-year-old visited celebrity colorist Jenda Alcorn at Ramirez|Tran Salon who helped transform the teen’s flaxen locks into a shade she referred to on her Instagram as “pink panther.”

While we love that the teen took a bold chance with her hair and it totally payed off, this look may not be quite the rule-breaking style of summer ’16 Elle hoped it would be. Kylie Jenner and her ever-changing carousel of hair color aside, we hate to break it to everyone, but Tori Spelling did it first.
